Alignment-Free Paladin

Post by God_of_Awesome »

The Champion was one attempt but how would you try retooling the Paladin in a game with alignments thrown out the window?

None that I am aware of (Kantian Paladin does not fulfil the criteria) - but honestly what do you expect from an alignment-less Paladin. The alignment thing is THE iconic Paladin thing.

If you're going to have an "alignmentless paladin", you're probably going to end up with either a variant of a Knight (by basing it on Roland etc.) or a Mystic Knight with abjuration, healing, and light-based powers (based on Final Fantasy, Warcraft, etc. paladins).

Depends on what you were buying with it. But since it isn't really worth much, you probably aren't going to end up giving a lot of change.

Play a Cleric. Possibly drop a single spell per day for each spell level in exchange for full BAB and some minor flavor abilities. Possibly wider weapon proficiency.

A paladin is essentially someone who fights for some sort of philosophy that they believe makes the world a better place. You can just as easily replace all the 'good' components with stuff related to that philosophy, such as allowing them to smite people who disagree with their way of seeing things instead of 'evil', and replace their code of conduct with one that connects to their beliefs.
Everything I learned about DnD, I learned from Frank Trollman.

Which was the flavorful purpose of the Champion, right up until I got sucked into the mechanics. Though both your suggestions provide surprisingly simpler solutions. I will have to ponder this.

WHich I think that was the what the guy meant above by pointing to the kantian paladin. Not to say "use this" but to say "like this" use those same mechanics tape a belief system over it.....profitt.

I quoted sinister because basically what this whole idea set become is something like moral relativist: The paladin.
If going by this model.
You can use any belief system you want.
Nazi SS? Paladins
Mustlim Extremists? Paladin
Elite from the covenant in halo? Paladins (in fact we used to call them space mustlims when we were playing in the marines)

See what I'm saying? To me it becomes a very smite heavily thing though because it seems the most appropriate ability would be "Smite Nonbeliever"
Don't hate the world you see, create the world you want....
Dear Midnight, you have actually made me sad. I took a day off of posting yesterday because of actual sadness you made me feel in my heart for you.

Which is funny, because they're more clearly Christian than Muslim. There are actual Christian factions that believe that destroying the world is necessary to go to heaven.
